While there is little doubt that most teachers recognize writing as a foundational skill for academic success, effectively integrating writing to support content learning across the curriculum has its challenges. When I ask students to repeat the highlighting task with their own writing, they usually see a stark contrast in colored content between their own work and the mentor text.

Have students write up lab reports in science class or create websites about important historical events. We already looked at Adaptation from a social studies perspective and intertwined it with personal narrative writing and literature.

In fact, students often report that they understand the content a bit better once they have written about it. Taking note of this allows Mr. Teachers of all subjects create or obtain worksheets and textbooks.
